Sony Ericsson launches a smartphone compatible with China Mobile TD-SCDMA:

The mobile phone company Sony Ericsson in Beijing launched the first smart phone in China compatible with the standard TD-SCDMA third generation of operator China Mobile, the official newspaper reported Tuesday’s China
Daily.

The new product of the company, the A8i, will support 3G networks by the use of TD-SCDMA (English acronym for “standard of Code Division Multiple Access and Time Division”) and WLAN connections.

The TD-SCDMA is a system developed entirely by Chinese engineers, who in 2000 won approval from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and, thus, joined the European WCDMA and American CDMA2000 as the
three international standards verified for 3G telephony.

“China is a hugely important market for Sony Ericsson and we are committed to maintaining our strong position and drive growth continuously introducing new and exciting products to this market,” said Sony Ericsson
president, Bert Nordberg, in presenting the product in Beijing .

The Sony Ericsson A8i has a 3.5 inch touch screen with multimedia streaming capabilities to offer high definition visuals and entertainment applications that are linked directly to the download service of China Mobile, the largest mobile phone operator world, with more than 500 million customers.
